Page Background

In Europe vines are grown on around 3.2 million hectares. The two main

diseases affecting vines and requiring treatment wherever grapes are grown

are Downy Mildew (caused by

Plasmopara viticola

) and Powdery Mildew

(Erysiphe necator).

• Downy Mildew has a super developed area (SDA) in Europe of 18 million

hectares (equating to around 5.6 treatments annually per hectare).

• Powdery Mildew has a SDA in Europe of 17 million hectares (meaning an

average of 5.3 treatments annually per hectare).

In recent years, a variety of factors has led to an increase in secondary

diseases:

• Climatic conditions: alternating storms, heavy rain, humidity, high

temperatures.

• The banning of active ingredients (a.i.) and even withdrawal of complete

a.i. families.

• Switch to organic production: some diseases are not totally controlled by

organic products or active ingredients.

As a result,

BlackRot

,

“Guignardia bidwellii”

, an old disease that had appeared

to be dormant, re-emerged to become a major threat for winegrowers.
